The KwaZulu-Natal Griqua Council is a united platform of Griqua descendants—guided by the wisdom of our elders and driven by the energy of our youth. We exist to preserve our heritage, strengthen our communities, and advance the social and economic future of the Griqua people in KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu-Natal Griqua Council exists to preserve, protect, and promote the heritage, identity, dignity, and future of the Griqua people in KwaZulu-Natal and Southern Africa.
Our mission is to unite Griqua descendants through cultural restoration, historical recognition, youth empowerment, traditional leadership, land advocacy, community development, and education. We are committed to rebuilding pride in our ancestral legacy while creating opportunities that uplift present and future generations.
Guided by the values of unity, respect, justice, integrity, and self-determination, the Council works to:
• Preserve and celebrate Griqua history, traditions, language, and cultural identity;
• Advocate for recognition, inclusion, and the protection of Griqua heritage and ancestral rights;
• Empower youth and elders through leadership, education, skills development, and community participation;
• Promote responsible land stewardship, heritage preservation, and sustainable development initiatives;

• Ensure that the voices and contributions of the Griqua people are honoured and remembered within South Africa’s national story.
The KwaZulu-Natal Griqua Council stands as a voice for unity, restoration, and renewal — honouring the sacrifices of our ancestors while building a stronger future for generations to come.

“The time has come for our people to stand together, guided by our past and committed to our future. Through unity, respect, and purpose, we will rebuild what was lost and secure what lies ahead.”
— Chief Edward Jacobs
The KwaZulu-Natal Griqua Council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Griqua people — a proud community shaped by resilience, faith, leadership, and the blending of diverse ancestral traditions across Southern Africa.
Griqua culture reflects the historic roots of the Khoi, San, African, and European peoples who came together over generations to form a unique nation with its own identity, customs, leadership structures, and way of life. Our ancestors built communities based on cooperation, faith, courage, and self-governance while travelling across the Cape frontier and into Griqualand East.
Today, Griqua culture continues to live through our families, elders, traditions, stories, music, faith, language, clothing, and community gatherings.
We honour the legacy of historic Griqua leaders such as Adam Kok III and the generations who protected the dignity and independence of the Griqua people during times of hardship and displacement.
Our culture is expressed through:
• Respect for elders and traditional leadership;
• Strong family and community bonds;
• Christian faith traditions deeply rooted in Griqua history;
• Oral storytelling and preservation of ancestral knowledge;
• Traditional music, dance, and cultural celebrations;
• Historical dress and symbols of Griqua identity;
• Connection to land, cattle, farming, and rural community life;
• The spirit of resilience, unity, and self-determination.
The KwaZulu-Natal Griqua Council works to ensure that future generations understand where they come from and take pride in their heritage. We believe cultural preservation is essential for healing historical injustices and rebuilding strong communities.
Our mission includes:
• Recording and preserving Griqua history and genealogy;
• Supporting cultural events, heritage days, and traditional gatherings;
• Educating youth about Griqua identity and leadership;
• Protecting historical sites, graves, and community records;
• Promoting recognition of the Griqua people within South Africa.
Griqua culture is not only part of the past — it is a living legacy carried forward by our people today. Through unity, pride, and cultural restoration, we continue the journey of our ancestors and ensure that the Griqua name remains strong for generations to come.
